Pick what's going wrong and I'll point you to the page that fixes it. It takes two clicks, and the first answer is usually enough.

Pick what is going wrong

Rule out the controller first

Before you change a setting, open the gamepad tester and press every button. A controller that lights up there is working, and the fix is in the game or in how the game reaches your Mac. If the tester sees it and the game does not, the game is the thing to fix.

How this fits with InputConfig

These pages test a controller or look up what you need for it: a fix, a button name, a game or a preset. InputConfig is what puts it to work on a Mac: it maps every button, stick and trigger to keys, clicks, the pointer or scrolling, per app if you like, and its Live Visualizer draws the controller live with what each control does.

Questions

Why is my controller connected but not working on my Mac?

The Mac can list a controller that the game is not looking for. The game may have no controller support, may want a different kind of controller, or may run somewhere the controller does not reach, such as a wrapper. Pick "The game ignores it" above to get the page for your case.

How do I check that my Mac sees my controller?

Open the gamepad tester and press any button. If the buttons light up there, the Mac sees it and the problem is in the game. If nothing lights up, the problem is the connection.
