Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on a Mac with a controller

Download on the Mac App StoreThe Final Fantasy VII Rebirth layout is built into InputConfig, free on the Mac App Store. You don't have to make an account, there are no subscriptions, and nothing is locked. Optimized for Apple silicon.

On a Mac: No Mac version. It streams to a Mac from a Windows PC you own. The stream normally passes a controller to the game's native scheme. It starts from the Final Fantasy XVI template, so Rebirth's ATB commands and character swaps need new keys.

Yes, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth plays on a Mac with a controller, streamed from a Windows PC you own, and possibly through CrossOver. This layout is for a stream that misses your pad, and it has the action half right out of the box: attack on a face button, dodge on another, the camera on the right stick, lock on with a click. The pause menu forgives a stream's latency.

The layout, control by control

How the layout thinks

  • Move and camera. The left stick walks on W, A, S and D. The right stick turns the camera with the mouse at speed 18.
  • Attack and magic. Sword attack on the left face button (left click), magic on the top (right click).
  • Move fast. Dodge on the right face button (Option), jump on the bottom (Space), dash on the right bumper (Shift).
  • Abilities. The left bumper holds the ability modifier (Z). The right trigger fires the first ability (Q), the left the second (E). D-pad up switches the ability set (Tab).
  • Items and menus. A potion on D-pad down (R). Lock on with the right stick click (middle click). Menu on Start (Escape), map on Back (M).

These rows come from the Final Fantasy XVI template, so the ability rows are where Rebirth's command menu, character swaps and Synergy skills go. The fight works as it stands, and the commands are the part left to finish.

Tune it

  • Commands and swaps. Set the ability rows' outputs to Rebirth's command menu, two character swaps and Synergy keys from its controls menu.
  • A buzz on the Limit Break. Turn on Vibrate in that row's Options once you give it a row.

Four key changes make the XVI rows into Rebirth's.

If the game sees the pad

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's own scheme is the better way to play when the stream passes your pad, and this layout is for CrossOver, where keys get through more reliably than a pad.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth controller support: controller or keyboard

Steam's store page lists full controller support for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, so the game was made to be played on a controller, menus included. A keyboard and mouse work as well, and the choice is yours. On a Mac, use the game's own controller support first when it sees your pad. This layout is for a pad it does not see, or for buttons it will not let you move.

If your controller is not working in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

When Final Fantasy VII Rebirth does not react to your controller on a Mac, check these in order:

  1. Check that the Mac sees the controller. Open the gamepad tester and press a button. If nothing lights up there, the problem is the connection, and a controller that is connected but not working covers that first.
  2. Pair the controller with the Mac first. A streaming app such as Steam Link, Moonlight or Parsec passes on only a controller the Mac already sees, so pair it before you start the stream, then press a button once Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is running. Streaming PC games to a Mac with a controller has the checks for each app.
  3. Play it from keys. If Final Fantasy VII Rebirth still ignores the pad, activate this layout. It sends the keyboard and mouse controls Final Fantasy VII Rebirth already reads. Turn the game's own controller option off while it runs, or a press can arrive twice. The layout works whether or not Final Fantasy VII Rebirth ever sees the controller.

Get it in two clicks

  1. Open InputConfig and click Smart Preset Maker on the welcome screen.
  2. Search for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and pick it. The layout is created as a preset in your sidebar, named and ready.
  3. Press Activate. Every row can be changed afterwards: the editor's Scan button rebinds any control the moment you touch it.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth controls: every button and the key it sends

The Sends column is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's default keyboard and mouse controls, as this layout expects them. If you changed a key in the game's settings, change the same row in InputConfig.

Questions

Does Final Fantasy VII Rebirth run on a Mac?

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth does not run natively on a Mac. It streams from a Windows PC you own, and the stream usually passes a controller through.

Can I play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on a Mac with CrossOver?

Whether it runs depends on the game version and your Mac, so check CodeWeavers' compatibility reports first. If it runs and your controller does not show up, this layout is the fix: CrossOver passes keys and the mouse to Windows games reliably and controllers less so. The CrossOver controller page explains why.

Can I play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on an M1 Mac or a MacBook Air?

Yes, through a stream. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth runs on the other end, on your own PC, so the Mac only plays the video and sends your input. An M1 MacBook Air streams it like any other Mac.
