Tropico 6 on a Mac with a controller

Download on the Mac App StoreThe Tropico 6 layout is built into InputConfig, free on the Mac App Store. You don't have to make an account, there are no subscriptions, and nothing is locked. Optimized for Apple silicon.

On a Mac: Native Mac version on Steam. Tropico 6 has a gamepad mode of its own from the console versions. Use it when it sees your controller. This layout is for pads it does not see, and for people who prefer the mouse interface.

Yes, Tropico 6 runs natively on the Mac and has a console-born gamepad mode, so try that first. This layout is for the two cases it misses: a pad it does not recognize, and people who like the mouse interface. El Presidente from a sofa either way.

The layout, control by control

Click a control. Labels:

How the layout thinks

  • Pointer. The left stick moves the pointer at speed 16.
  • Pan. The right stick pans with W, A, S and D.
  • Click. The right trigger places and selects (left click), the left trigger cancels and rotates (right click).
  • Zoom. The bumpers scroll the mouse wheel: the left zooms out, the right zooms in.
  • Time. Pause on the bottom face button (Space), speeds one, two and three on the right, left and top (1, 2, 3). Menu on Start (Escape).

The mouse interface, with the pointer under your left thumb.

Tune it

  • Almanac. Both stick clicks are empty. Put its key on one.
  • A slow pointer for small buildings. Duplicate the four left-stick rows, set While also holding to a spare button on the copies, and give them half the speed.

A slower pointer behind one button places small buildings cleanly.

If the game sees the pad

Tropico 6 has a gamepad mode from the console versions, so try it first with this preset off, and keep this layout for a pad it misses or for the mouse interface.

Tropico 6 controller support: controller or keyboard

Steam's store page lists full controller support for Tropico 6, so the game was made to be played on a controller, menus included. A keyboard and mouse work as well, and the choice is yours.

From Steam's listing, checked in October 2026. Every game's listing is in Mac games with controller support.

If your controller is not working in Tropico 6

When Tropico 6 does not react to your controller on a Mac, check these in order:

  1. Check that the Mac sees the controller. Open the gamepad tester and press a button. If nothing lights up there, the problem is the connection, and a controller that is connected but not working covers that first.
  2. Check the Steam Input setting for Tropico 6. In Steam, open Tropico 6, Properties, Controller, and change the Steam Input override. A controller that works in Steam but not in the game goes through each choice.
  3. Play it from keys. If Tropico 6 still ignores the pad, activate this layout. It sends the keyboard and mouse controls Tropico 6 already reads. The layout works whether or not Tropico 6 ever sees the controller.

Get it in two clicks

  1. Open InputConfig and click Smart Preset Maker on the welcome screen.
  2. Search for Tropico 6 and pick it. The layout is created as a preset in your sidebar, named and ready.
  3. Press Activate. Every row can be changed afterwards: the editor's Scan button rebinds any control the moment you touch it.

Tropico 6 controls: every button and the key it sends

The Sends column is Tropico 6's default keyboard and mouse controls, as this layout expects them. If you changed a key in the game's settings, change the same row in InputConfig.

Questions

Should I use Tropico's gamepad mode or this?

The gamepad mode, if it sees your controller. This layout is for when it does not.

Does Tropico 6 have controller support?

Yes. The Steam store lists full controller support, and the Mac version is on Steam too, so try your pad in the game first. If the game does not see it, or you prefer the mouse interface, this layout sends the mouse and keyboard instead.
