Team Fortress 2 on a Mac with a controller
The Team Fortress 2 layout is built into InputConfig, free on the Mac App Store. You don't have to make an account, there are no subscriptions, and nothing is locked. Optimized for Apple silicon.
On a Mac: Steam no longer lists a Mac version of Team Fortress 2. The store shows Windows and Linux only. On a Mac today it is a stream from a Windows PC you own, or the Windows version in a compatibility layer such as CrossOver. Either way the controller is often not seen. This layout sends the keyboard binds from any pad.
You can play TF2 on a Mac with a controller as a stream from a Windows PC or as the Windows version in CrossOver, and this layout plays every class from a pad with keyboard binds. TF2 came to the Mac in 2010 and is still free, but Steam no longer lists a Mac version.
Both routes are places where a controller tends to go missing, and the game's own gamepad support was never much to begin with. Heavy is the proof this works: Heavy does not need a mouse, Heavy needs a big trigger.
The layout, control by control
How the layout thinks
- Move and look. The sticks.
- Fire. The right trigger fires. The left trigger is alt fire, which zooms the sniper rifle and charges the shield.
- Face buttons. Jump, crouch, reload, and E to call for a Medic.
- Taunt. G on the left bumper.
- Weapons and menus. The D-pad is primary, secondary and melee on up, left and right. Tab for the scoreboard on Create, Escape on Options.
Every class shares this skeleton, and the next section adds what each one needs.
Tune it per class
- Soldier and Demo. The rocket jump is crouch, jump and fire at once. A macro on the right stick click: Ctrl, Space, left click, within 20 ms. Airshots are still yours to hit.
- Engineer and Spy. The PDA and disguise menus are number keys after a key. A chord on the D-pad sends 1 to 4.
- Medic. Uber is alt fire, already on the left trigger. Turn on auto-heal in the game's options so the medigun stays on without a held trigger.
- Scout. Double jump is two presses of the same button. Nothing to add.
- Voice. Z and X open the voice menus. Put them on a chord.
Valve added gamepad support themselves, and this layout sends keyboard and mouse, which servers see as an ordinary keyboard player. The rocket jump macro is the one that makes Soldier playable from a pad.
Team Fortress 2 controller support: controller or keyboard
Steam's store page lists partial controller support for Team Fortress 2: it plays on a controller, but some parts, such as a launcher, text entry or a menu, still expect a keyboard or a mouse. This layout sends keys and mouse movement from the pad, which can cover the parts the game's own support leaves out.
From Steam's listing, checked in October 2026. Every game's listing is in Mac games with controller support.
If your controller is not working in Team Fortress 2
When Team Fortress 2 does not react to your controller on a Mac, check these in order:
- Check that the Mac sees the controller. Open the gamepad tester and press a button. If nothing lights up there, the problem is the connection, and a controller that is connected but not working covers that first.
- Pair the controller with the Mac first. A streaming app such as Steam Link, Moonlight or Parsec passes on only a controller the Mac already sees, so pair it before you start the stream, then press a button once Team Fortress 2 is running. Streaming PC games to a Mac with a controller has the checks for each app.
- Expect less inside a wrapper. In CrossOver or the Game Porting Toolkit, Wine passes a controller to Team Fortress 2 only some of the time, and the keyboard and mouse get through every time. Using a controller with CrossOver games has the checks.
- Play it from keys. If Team Fortress 2 still ignores the pad, activate this layout. It sends the keyboard and mouse controls Team Fortress 2 already reads. The layout works whether or not Team Fortress 2 ever sees the controller.
Get it in two clicks
- Open InputConfig and click Smart Preset Maker on the welcome screen.
- Search for Team Fortress 2 and pick it. The layout is created as a preset in your sidebar, named and ready.
- Press Activate. Every row can be changed afterwards: the editor's Scan button rebinds any control the moment you touch it.
Team Fortress 2 controls: every button and the key it sends
The Sends column is Team Fortress 2's default keyboard and mouse controls, as this layout expects them. If you changed a key in the game's settings, change the same row in InputConfig.

| Right stick down | Mouse motion down (speed 14) | Look down |

Questions
Does Team Fortress 2 still work on a Mac?
Not as a Mac app. Steam lists Team Fortress 2 for Windows and Linux only. On a Mac you can stream it from a Windows PC or try the Windows version in CrossOver, and when the controller is not seen there, this layout sends the keyboard binds instead.
Is a controller allowed in TF2?
Valve added gamepad support themselves. This layout sends keyboard and mouse instead, which servers see as an ordinary keyboard player.
Can I play Team Fortress 2 on an M1 Mac or a MacBook Air?
Yes, through a stream. Team Fortress 2 runs on the other end, on your own PC, so the Mac only plays the video and sends your input. An M1 MacBook Air streams it like any other Mac.
