Age of Mythology: Retold on a Mac with a controller

Download on the Mac App StoreThe Age of Mythology Retold layout is built into InputConfig, free on the Mac App Store. You don't have to make an account, there are no subscriptions, and nothing is locked. Optimized for Apple silicon.

On a Mac: No Mac version. It streams to a Mac through Xbox Cloud Gaming or a Windows PC you own. The stream normally passes a controller to the game's native scheme, which Retold has.

Yes, Age of Mythology: Retold plays on a Mac with a controller, through Xbox Cloud Gaming or a stream from a Windows PC. Retold shipped with a real controller scheme, so use that when the stream passes your pad. This layout is the fallback, and it is the RTS layout: the pointer on the left stick, the camera on the right, select and command on the triggers.

The layout, control by control

Click a control. Labels:

How the layout thinks

  • Pointer. The left stick moves the pointer at speed 16.
  • Camera. The right stick pans with the arrow keys.
  • Select and command. The right trigger selects (left click), the left trigger moves and attacks (right click).
  • Groups and build. Control groups 1, 2 and 3 on the bottom, right and left face buttons. The build menu on the top (B).
  • Zoom and menu. The left bumper zooms out and the right zooms in, with the mouse wheel. Menu on Start (Escape).

Select on one trigger and command on the other, the way a mouse would.

Tune it

  • God powers. The D-pad is empty. Put their keys there.
  • More groups. Add 4 to 6 as chord rows on the face buttons.
  • A slow pointer for the villager you are trying to click. Duplicate the four left-stick rows, set While also holding to a spare button on the copies, and give them half the speed.

The empty D-pad is the obvious home for god powers.

If the game sees the pad

Steam lists partial controller support for Age of Mythology: Retold, and the Xbox version that Xbox Cloud Gaming streams is built for a pad, so in the cloud the game's own scheme comes first.

Age of Mythology Retold controller support: controller or keyboard

Steam's store page lists partial controller support for Age of Mythology Retold: it plays on a controller, but some parts, such as a launcher, text entry or a menu, still expect a keyboard or a mouse. This layout sends keys and mouse movement from the pad, which can cover the parts the game's own support leaves out.

From Steam's listing, checked in October 2026. Every game's listing is in Mac games with controller support.

If your controller is not working in Age of Mythology Retold

When Age of Mythology Retold does not react to your controller on a Mac, check these in order:

  1. Check that the Mac sees the controller. Open the gamepad tester and press a button. If nothing lights up there, the problem is the connection, and a controller that is connected but not working covers that first.
  2. Press a button after the stream has started. A stream only picks up a controller that is paired with the Mac, and a browser shows a controller to a page only after a button press. Start Age of Mythology Retold, then press any button. Streaming from your own PC has its own checks, in how to stream PC games to a Mac with a controller.
  3. Play it from keys. If Age of Mythology Retold still ignores the pad, activate this layout. It sends the keyboard and mouse controls Age of Mythology Retold already reads. Turn the game's own controller option off while it runs, or a press can arrive twice. The layout works whether or not Age of Mythology Retold ever sees the controller.

Get it in two clicks

  1. Open InputConfig and click Smart Preset Maker on the welcome screen.
  2. Search for Age of Mythology Retold and pick it. The layout is created as a preset in your sidebar, named and ready.
  3. Press Activate. Every row can be changed afterwards: the editor's Scan button rebinds any control the moment you touch it.

Age of Mythology Retold controls: every button and the key it sends

The Sends column is Age of Mythology Retold's default keyboard and mouse controls, as this layout expects them. If you changed a key in the game's settings, change the same row in InputConfig.

Questions

Does Age of Mythology: Retold run on a Mac?

Age of Mythology: Retold does not run natively on a Mac. Xbox Cloud Gaming or a PC stream carries it, and either usually passes a controller through.

Does Age of Mythology: Retold have controller support?

Partly on PC: Steam lists partial controller support. The Xbox version, which Xbox Cloud Gaming streams, is built for a pad. When your stream passes the controller, use that. This layout is for a stream that does not see it.

Can I play Age of Mythology Retold on an M1 Mac or a MacBook Air?

Yes, through a stream. Age of Mythology Retold runs on the other end, on a cloud service or your own PC, so the Mac only plays the video and sends your input. An M1 MacBook Air streams it like any other Mac.
